The definition of insanity is, as someone famous put it, doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result each time you do it.
Why do we treat menial tasks, the same way? Why are we not optimising that task so that we never have to do it again.
For instance, one of my clients has a now very large email database, drawn from multiple different film festivals across the world, operated out of Google Spreadsheets that then needs to be uploaded into Campaign Monitor and updated monthly.
This is a pretty hideous task that I despise doing. But every month I sit down at my computer and spend 2 – 3 hours, trying to complete this one task.
Today I sat down and spent 2 – 3 hours, breaking down the process to the absolute bones. Recording a video, cutting it together and editing it to be as user friendly as possible.
This video I then showed to one of our team members who helps me with a lot of the admin side of things for my client who is now able to take over this monthly task.
You may call bullshit on this and say, ‘No wait, that’s not task optimisation, that’s just delegation.’ To that I answer, it’s one in the same.
If you have the opportunity to create more time for yourself, take it.
